CONTEXT

Complutense University Madrid is the top educational institution in Spain. It has 6,400 professors and an average 88,000 students a year. It currently offers 77 official degrees, 230 custom-designed degrees and close to 200 PhD programs.

This large institution, based on a highly qualified staff and motivated numerous student body, shows an innovative spirit and always backs projects that can improve the quality of the education it provides.

From the Central Computing Services Department, Aurelio Hernández, Head of Teaching and Research Support and the Multimedia and Videoconferencing Services Workshop, spoke about the university’s needs.

“We realized that more and more multimedia material was being used, in the Virtual Campus, congresses, webs created for research projects, etc. Multimedia is what sells nowadays. We realized that all that material needed to be managed before we were overwhelmed by the university community’s continuous requests,” says Aurelio Hernández.

“Before we acquired Videoma Archive, our videos were stored in a streaming server. We could email the video’s URL from the Multimedia Department to the professor but access to the data was very limited and unstable. We needed to have more control over the videos we received to digitize or store,” said Amado José Pozuelo.

The Complutense University Madrid needed the infrastructure to set up a media content manager to organize professor, department and researcher videos and distribute them via Videos on Demand online. This infrastructure needed to be able to record, digitize, store, retrieve and publish videos and images from congresses, conferences, classes, clinical sessions and any other event.

SOLUTION

o undertake this project, ISID and Techex, a multimedia systems wholesaler, implemented the Videoma Archive solution as the main management tool to capture, catalogue, store, retrieve and publish media content for easy reuse and consultation from a VoD platform.
